Mail Call

"Alcohol doesn't make people kill. Alcohol is a mood-altering drug. Judgment is impaired. States differ on the level of alcohol consumption before considered 'drunk.' Marijuana is also a mood-altering drug. Cigarettes are heavily taxed. The country needs the revenue of both evils to help the economy. I have seen people on marijuana and I would not want to be a passenger in their vehicle. It's not what is right anymore. It's about greedy, corrupt politicians."

- Hagerstown

"If someone had been living under a rock for the last 10 years and read the comments of the people running for county commissioner, they would conclude that the biggest problem facing Washington County was the lack of development due to impact fees and the APFO. We have empty houses, warehouses and buildings everywhere, foreclosures, a 10 percent unemployment rate and businesses closing daily. Isn't there anyone who will stop the wasteful spending and try to address our real problems?"

"I noticed in The Herald-Mail on the 9th, about - this is several times - about publishing the city salaries. I say city and county salaries, people making at least $80,000 or more, but also list the benefits. The benefits are important. See what we pay and what they pay, and how good they have it. Keep us informed. There is an election coming up. I want to know what my county commissioners and city council and everybody else are doing."

- Chewsville

"I hope if anyone knows who abused that dog in Berkeley Springs by dragging it behind a car will please tell the police. A person so insecure and ignorant to hurt a helpless animal will go on to hurt people. He needs to be stopped, and put in jail. Please, people, help the animals, and report this person."

- Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

"Studies have shown that people who have used marijuana for long periods of time in their life, it has the same effect on the brain as a person that is senile or very old. And I've seen people that are under the influence of marijuana, and I certainly wouldn't advise them to drive a car. So I hope people don't think it's not a mood-altering drug, because it is. I'm not saying it's addictive, but I will say it's mood-altering. So it is about the same thing as a drunk behind the wheel."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I just drove past Tommytown Road, where I saw a tractor pulling a wagonload of kids out of a farm field. I had no idea that's where children came from."

- Keedysville

"To the person who said something about people criticizing President Obama: Good for you. Get a life, people, and stop complaining. And also, the lady that has the van parked in front of her house, if you don't have a special parking place, you can't say a word."

- Hagerstown

"We thank you for our curbs, which we don't need, and want to know when are we going to get sidewalks here?"

- Stouffer Avenue, Funkstown

"I have two heavy-duty plastic buckets that I put inside of each other to store over the winter, and now that I want to use them, I cannot pull them apart. I tried and tried, and my husband and my son have tried. They can't get them pulled apart. Can anybody tell me how to get those two plastic buckets apart?"

- Hagerstown

"I would just like to say that I think it's totally ridiculous that Washington County schools are back in session on Aug. 18. It is way too hot outside. This heat wave's crazy. I see no reason why children should go back to school before September, like it used to be."

- Hagerstown

"You know, I cannot understand these right-wing talk show hosts and the right-wing Republicans complaining about Michelle Obama taking her daughter down there on her vacation, and complaining she should have taken her down, they should have taken their vacation down at like New Orleans or somewhere down there along that seashore where the oil was. Would you take your daughter?"

- Hagerstown

"I also agree with the caller who said school starts too early. The 18th of August? That's ridiculous. As far as the vacation goes, they did tell us earlier this year, the calendar was out, and said when school was starting. So you never should have planned your vacation without looking first. But the 18th, that's ridiculous. I mean, come on, now, some kids that are in sports and band have already started a week, week and a half ago."

- Rohrersville

"Michelle Obama's trip recently she took to Spain with her daughter cost American taxpayers $375,000."

- Sharpsburg

"If the city and the council members can agree to build the Hagerstown Suns a new stadium, they build it in the right place, they can get small business owners to build shops in and about the place of the Suns stadium. It can be used for not only baseball, but they can also use it for other things such as hosting concerts and much more. Build it, and people will - traveling teams, fans of those teams will fill hotels. It will be a great economic benefit to this city and to this county."

- Hagerstown

"Gee, why not a Supreme Court justice with no judicial experience? Look how well a president with almost no experience has worked out."

- Maugansville

"Our country is run more on convenience and greed, instead of on necessity and being satisfied."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the person complaining about school starting so early this year. Let's just end it, and have school all year-round for the kids. That way teachers wouldn't have to waste their time by reviewing what the kids learned the previous year. It would keep the children out of trouble during the summer. Have school all year long, with breaks in between semesters. That would end it."

- Hagerstown
