Killings remind us why we're in Afghanistan

To the editor:

The senseless, cruel killing of the 10-member medical team in Afghanistan reminds us of the type of people the world is up against in the sinister Taliban.

Maybe we needed a wake-up call. Hopefully not, as it was too dear a price to pay to strengthen our resolve to continue the fight.

It seems with the economy foremost in our thoughts, we are waning in our resolve to continue the fight. Sometimes, we forget those in need and look inward instead of outward. The fight in Afghanistan is both an inward - our security - and an outward - the free world's - struggle. Let's not forget that.

Our resolve, due to the inhumane killings, is now tempered. Let's not forget the reasons for our mission.

The Taliban is an enigma to the majority of the world and a nemesis to the world's population of freedom-loving people.

Sarah Palin accomplished a lot while in office

To the editor:

I appreciate Ned A. Garrett's letter to the editor regarding Sarah Palin ("We need more conservative-minded women in public life such as Sarah Palin," Friday, Aug. 6, page A4).

I agree wholeheartedly with his recounting of her abilities to govern the largest state (by land area) in the Union and her many accomplishments (and popularity) during her time in office.

I also appreciate his clear assessment of her freshness and youthful, attractive looks. I think many of the women who dislike her are simply guilty of a certain amount of jealousy.

God bless Sarah Palin for her endeavors to help keep America the beautiful and wonderful country that it is. You betcha!

Pearson knocks it out of the park with letter

To the editor:

The purpose of this letter is to extend my appreciation to Rodney Pearson Sr. of Keedysville for another excellent letter to the editor.

The letter ("Only vote for those who will not run again," Sunday, July 25, page A11) was right on target.

Mr. Pearson, with that letter, you not only hit another home run, this time you hit a grand slam. Thank you.
