New U.S. quarter to depict Harpers Ferry park

August 10, 2010

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginians will have to wait until 2016 to see the state's entry in the U.S. Mint's new "America the Beautiful" series of quarters.

The new series depicts national parks and wildlife sites. The order of issue is based on when the sites were established. The first quarter issued in April depicts Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, the first natural area to be preserved by the federal government in 1832.

West Virginia's quarter will depict Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which was established in 1944.

U.S. Mint spokeswoman Carolyn Fields says the West Virginia quarter's design won't be determined for several years.
