MARCH 9, 1929-AUG. 8, 2010

Robert "Bob" Sweeney, 81, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at his home.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Olga T. Sweeney; his children, Paul and Denise Sweeney, Susan and Ed Bain, Steven and Julia Sweeney, and son, James W. Sweeney. He will be fondly remembered by his sister, Jeanne Sietas and his brother-in-law, Stanley Suzdak. He will be greatly missed by his eight grandchildren, Brandon and Amanda Sweeney, Alex Sweeney, Evan Stottlemyer, and Katelyn, Sophie, Zoe and Sean Sweeney. "Uncle Bobby" will also be remembered by his extended family of friends, cousins, nieces and nephews he cared so much about.

Robert was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 9, 1929, to the late Wilbur and Helen Sweeney. He was the younger brother and close friend of his sister, the late Doris Suzdak, and the adoring older brother of Jeanne Sietas.

After traveling the United States, Robert graduated with a B.A. from Pace College of New York and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He met his future wife, Olga Sabatowich, while attending dance class (she was his teacher) at "Arthur Murray's" studio in New York. Bob and Olga continued to dance and hold hands their whole life. Bob moved with his family to Hagerstown, Md., in 1973 and had been an active resident since. He was a volunteer with the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary, the "Make a Wish" foundation and many other local organizations. The greatest gift Bob gave to those who were lucky enough to know him was his ability to laugh and find humor in ourselves. His greatest understanding was the importance of family. We love you and will miss you greatly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to any local charity of choice.

The family will receive friends one hour before the memorial service at the funeral home.
