Funkstown 'dropped the ball'regarding trash pickup changes

August 10, 2010

FUNKSTOWN -- Funkstown Town Councilman Robert "Bobby" Rodgers Jr. said the town might have "dropped the ball" in notifying residents about the change in trash collection.

The Herald-Mail published several stories about the change.

Perhaps people should have been notified via postcard because many residents didn't realize trash collection had been cut to once a week, Rodgers said at Monday's council meeting.

The change went into effect in August with the new contract.

Even after trash wasn't picked up on the first Monday, some residents weren't sure it wasn't a fluke and that they couldn't set it out the next Monday, he said.

Mayor Paul N. Crampton Jr. agreed the town dropped the ball.

Town Clerk/Treasurer Brenda Haynes said it was too late to put the trash change on the July water bill because of delays in getting the contract approved.

Trash is now to be set out Wednesday evenings for Thursday collection.

Crampton asked Councilman Richard L. Gaver to put the trash collection information on the town's website.

He also asked Gaver to look into an e-mail alert system through the website. People could sign up for alerts about town information, including events, Crampton said.

Town resident Luke Barnette suggested the e-mail alert system.
