The local Social Security office moved this week from Hagerstown to Halfway.

The new office is at 1710 Underpass Way, suite 100, near the Ramada Plaza Hotel. Parking and the entrance to the office are in the back.

At 9,120 square feet, the new office is larger than the previous office, District Manager Becky Stup said. She didn't know the size of the old office.

The Social Security office had been at 1258 Maryland Ave., near South End Shopping Center, for about 13 or 14 years, Assistant District Manager Mary Castle-Horne said.

The office administers Social Security retirement and disability payments, survivor benefits and Supplemental Security Income. It also issues Social Security cards.

On Tuesday, the first day the new office was open, 124 people stopped in, which is about an average day, Castle-Horne said.

The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Castle-Horne said the office is encouraging the public to file electronic applications, which arrive in the office the next day.

Stup and Castle-Horne said people with questions should call 1-800-772-1213. It is staffed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Anyone who still has a question may contact the local office at 1-866-331-7125. That number is staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
