Candidates forum



The League of Women Voters will hold a candidates forum for county commissioners candidates Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St. in Hagerstown.

It will be held in the lower level of the church. Admission is free.

Losses for the week for the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter were 23 1/2 pounds.

The best TOPS losers were Vergie Smith and Charles Houser. The best KOPS losers were Mary Reid and Cindy Ryder.

Charles won the "Get-R-Done" prize and donated the cash back to the club. Eileen Renwick took the Ha! Ha! prize The no-no snack for the week is snack crackers. Terri Hendricks gave her Pound Puppy to Sharron Twigg.

Debbie Harden led the program titled "The Sugar Program." She used bags of sugar for a visual example of what various pounds of weight looks and feels like.

Patsy Price reviewed the Gold Star Program requirements. Donna Blackowitz presented resources from the TOPS website.

The annual Food for the Hungry collection will be held during October and the hats, gloves and mittens collection will be the month of November.

Young at Heart

This week's thinner winner was Ernie. Following announcements, Joyce presented a program on chair exercises, giving members a short workout.

Last Man's Club picnic



The Vietnam Last Man's Club at American Legion Post 42 on Northern Avenue will host its annual picnic fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 11, at the post home, starting at 4:30 p.m.

The menu will include steak with chicken corn soup, raw vegetables and dip, plus beverage.

Tickets cost $15 and are available from any member or at the post home. The deadline to buy tickets is Sept. 4.

First aid class



The Washington County Red Cross, at 1131 Conrad Court in Hagerstown, will hold a CRP/AED Child and Infant and First Aid Certification Course from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The course includes manual, skill cards and certification cards. The purpose of the course is to train individuals to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations, and recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in children and infants.

The training is required by all day-care providers. Registration is required. Call 301-739-0717 to reserve a seat.
