Mail Call

August 08, 2010

"To the person who would like to see Chris Shank elected and who also believes people are 'entitled' to unemployment pay: You need to pay attention. Chris Shank and his right-wing supporters want to cut taxes and cut government spending. I doubt that Shank - if it were his choice to make - would approve of such a massive increase in spending."

- Washington County

"This is in response to the Williamsport caller, regarding Don Munson. Check your facts. Munson was voting for furlough days for state employees the very same time he was voting for pay raises for O'Malley's top cronies. Munson's no friend of correctional officers."

- Hagerstown

"President Obama is playing around with the health care bill. In the meantime, the medical profession, insurance companies, pharmaceutical and doctors are raising their prices right now. Why don't Medicare raise their prices to compete with them, or put a regulatory commission on to the medical profession to get the price of health care down? If you're on Social Security, you are completely out of luck. And the veterans ... don't stand a chance."

"Sen. Cardin evidently thinks that his constituents are stupid, gullible and demented."

- Boonsboro

"I'd just like to thank The Herald-Mail for again publishing the sheriff's report for Washington County. I really missed it, and I'm glad it's back."

- Smithsburg

"I'm just calling, I see where they're gonna close Wilson Boulevard to do some railroad work again. If they don't do a better job on Wilson Boulevard than what they did on the Oak Ridge, they may as well forget about it, because Oak Ridge is lousy when you go across it in a car."

- Hagerstown

"I've been wondering what has happened to our local city police force. They have some good guys on that force, but it seems like they're all divided up into like a unit for this, a unit for that, whatnot. ... They aren't being very strict with the traffic laws here in Hagerstown. ... I've seen the cruisers go up by my house repeatedly, and cars will be parked illegally, different infractions - small infractions, but they're still against the law - and they just cruise on by."

- Hagerstown

"I know you buried it in the middle of the paper, after it was front page, but could someone please tell me why the City Council voted to give 35 employees $12,500 to retire? If they want to retire, they've got insurance and a pension. Let them retire."

- Hagerstown

"Perhaps the correctional officers would get a raise if there wasn't a convict escaping every other month."

- Hagerstown

"I cannot believe the town of Funkstown hired a contractor to lay huge concrete slabs at Edgewood Drive and Poplar and Chestnut streets, so no traffic could go up either street, and then have the nerve to ask the town citizens to donate money for repairs on the town hall. Unbelievable."

- Funkstown

"I just want to tell everybody that I am convinced that the City of Hagerstown has no strategic plan. I was sitting watching Channel 6 on Tuesday at the City Council work session, where they tried to decide what they're gonna ask money for. Nobody has a clue. Is there a strategic plan for Hagerstown, or are we just doomed?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the person that put a Mail Call in the other day saying that cops, correctional officers and other people hadn't had raises in a while. I guarantee, I can guarantee you for a fact, the correctional officers in the state of Maryland not only have had no raises, but have taken a pay cut over the last year. So they more than need a pay increase. They need way paid ... they work like dogs and don't get appreciated for it. Have a good day."

- Hagerstown

"Can anybody tell me if they have heard - because I was told yesterday - that it's calling for a bad winter like we just went through. I have not heard that. Has anybody else heard that?"

- Brownsville

"Sunday's paper, it says Obama says he'll call GOP's bluff on the deficit. No. 1, he raised this deficit, now he wants to cut it by raising our taxes? He's got to be out of his mind. And this is for people that don't have a job or people that think they're not getting enough money. How'd they like to be the people in Bangladesh, that only get maybe $25 to $45 a month? How'd you like to live on that? The American people are spoiled rotten."

- Hancock

"OK, this is in response to the caller from Smithsburg with the bat in their basement. So let me get this straight. You shut your door so the bat can't get out through the house, but you want to go buy traps, you need help to get it out of your house. Why would you do that if you could just open up the door and let the thing out? Why would you rather kill the bat? I don't understand this."

- Maugansville

"I see it's time to re-elect the county commissioners again. How can we re-elect them if they don't give the people what they need? Where is our noise ordinance? We are still suffering with this. Don't think we forgot, just because you let it die down. Now we know who cares."
