Gruhler touring the county



Washington County Board of Education candidate Dottie Gruhler is making a "Citizens Tour" through Washington County this month.

"We thought it would be great if we could meet at local businesses in different areas," she wrote in an e-mail. "It is a great night to take the family out to dinner, chat with a board of education candidate and support your local businesses."

Her schedule:

o Aug. 9, 5 to 7 p.m., Red Byrd Restaurant, Keedysville

o Aug. 10, 5 to 7 p.m., Windy Hill Restaurant, Clear Spring

o Aug. 11, 6 to 8 p.m., Tony's Pizza, Williamsport

o Aug. 18, 5 to 7 p.m., Applewood Grill, Smithsburg

o Aug. 19, 6 to 8 p.m., Vesta Pizzeria, Boonsboro

o Aug. 24, 5 to 7 p.m., Little Sandy's Truck Stop Restaurant, Hancock

Gruhler is one of 11 candidates for the school board. A primary will be held Sept. 14.

Registration deadline



The deadline to register for Maryland's Sept. 14 primary election is Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. A voter application sent through the mail must be postmarked by that day.

People unsure if they're registered to vote can check at http://www.mdelections.org or contact the Washington County Board of Elections at 240-313-2050.

Campaign headquarters opening



Washington County's Republican and Democratic central committees will open campaign headquarters in the coming days.

The Republicans are planning a grand opening Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m.

The headquarters is at 120 Oak Ridge Drive, Suite 800, in the South Pointe Shopping Center. Candidates and the public are invited.

The Democrats will hold a headquarters grand opening at 245 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown Aug. 16 at noon. Democratic candidates will meet voters.

The headquarters will be open Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meinelschmidt opening HQ, too



State delegate candidate Cort Meinelschmidt also has a campaign headquarters grand opening planned -- Aug. 18 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at 39 E. Franklin St. in Hagerstown.

Meinelschmidt, a Republican, is challenging Democratic incumbent John P. Donoghue for the Subdistrict 2C delegate seat.
