Mail Call

August 06, 2010

"Can you believe Gov. O'Malley closed the welcome station and museum on Sideling Hill Mountain west of Hancock, and then is spending our state money in the city of Baltimore? Let's make a change in governor."

- Williamsport

"As usual, the Republicans disgust me. ... They wouldn't vote to help the 9/11 responders, in a bill yesterday. They wouldn't vote for it. This party of 'no' is getting sickening. They always pride themselves on being more American than Democrats. How do you figure? Every time there's a bill comes up that wants to help the poor and the sick and disadvantaged, they vote 'no' on it. These people risked their lives to help. ... I think the Chinese government's more American than the Republican Party."

- Hagerstown

"I'm reading Sunday's paper, and I'm just congratulating The Herald-Mail for putting 'Drivers still out of gear on rules.' I have driven down 70 going east and people pass me on the right-hand side like I'm sitting still, and that's a three-lane highway. So you know, this is absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much."

"I'd like to respond to a person from Martinsburg, W.Va., on 'You shouldn't have to show ID cards.' Well, if you shouldn't have to show ID cards, then you shouldn't be here illegal then. That's why you're showing ID cards. If you got a 21-year-old to go to a bar, then you gotta have your - if you don't card someone then you get a fine. So you need it. Another thing is, I don't see where this country's so free like you're talking about. This isn't a free country anymore. The politicians control everything."

- Hagerstown

"If Congress wants to continue this war, have a draft. Four or five tours for the same soldiers is causing many to break down. ... Do not nation-build in Afghanistan. I saw cities in Afghanistan with people using cell phones. They have money. I can't afford another monthly bill of a cell phone. We have people here poor. The news saw southern Ohio families going hungry, dirt roads, poor-type housing, trailers and some wooden houses, not great."

- Williamsport

"This is a response to the Shippensburg caller who complained about President Obama not going to address the Boy Scouts, but going on the TV show 'The View.' President Obama addressed the youth of this country through the school system, and every one of the Republicans complained about it. Now they want him to address the youth in the Boy Scouts? They'd probably use it as a protest, by having their children turn their backs on him. Also, President Bush appeared on Dr. Phil's show, and that was OK with them."

- Hagerstown

"I am responding to the Myersville caller who apparently knows the former governor of Alaska well enough to call her 'Sarah.' If it had not been for President Clinton's approval of the deep-water drilling act and the environmentalists' pressure to do so, the Gulf would not have experienced this disaster. Gov. Palin wants to drill in Alaska where the environment is more suitable."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I think it would be great to impeach President Obama and throw him out. Then have Jan Brewer take his place in the White House."

- Rohrersville

"For years 'The Man' has been making money off the sweat of my brow and hard work. Now, with the unemployment extension, I get a little 'payback.'"

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Herald-Mail ... ignored Del. Serafini's intent for the state pension forum. Serafini said multiple times he wanted everyone to have facts to use and understanding of the issues if the subject of pensions came up in conversation. ... Also omitted the subject and issue of public sector health benefits, which is a much, much bigger underfunded liability than pensions."

- Hagerstown

"To the Maugansville comment that when they receive junk mail with a postage paid envelope and they stuff the material back into the envelope and send it back: They say the post office needs the money. What you need to know, those envelopes are exactly what they say they are: Postage paid. All you are doing is costing the post office more time and money to handle mail that was already paid for. In other words, if you don't send it back, the company already paid for you (to) do it and that costs the company."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"To the Martinsburg caller who thinks an ID should never have to be shown in a free country: What planet are you from? Your whole concept is the kind that will eventually bring America down. A free American with understanding knows sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice something to keep freedom rolling. I guess since I am free I should just throw away my ID and join you? Not a chance. ... Your types think freedom is free."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I want to say thank you to all those fire and rescue companies in Washington County, and all other companies, who responded to the Clear Spring three-alarm fire. You all need to pat yourself on the back. What an awesome job you all did. Outstanding."

- Hagerstown
