Braves open tourney with win

SALISBURY, Md. -- Fred Kreiger had three hits and drove in a run, and Kent Worthington, Trevor Appleby and Matt Ridenour combined on a solid pitching performance as the Hagerstown Braves defeated the Meadowlands A's, representing Newark, N.J., 4-1 on Thursday at the NABF Regional Tournament.

Worthington started and pitched two scoreless innings. Appleby worked four innings and allowed one unearned run with two strikeouts for the win, and Ridenour earned the save with a scoreless seventh.

Ridenour added two singles and an RBI, while Tyler Beard singled and drove in two for the Braves. Trey Cobb singled, stole two bases and scored two runs.

Hagerstown will face Staton Island, N.Y., this morning at 10 and battle the host Purdue Chicks of Salisbury this evening at 5 to conclude pool play.
