Motorcycle racers to pay tribute to rider killed in W.Va.

August 04, 2010|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

A special tribute and celebration of the life of the late David E. Kessel will be held Saturday just prior to the American Motorcyclist Association Grand National Motorcycles Hub City Classic at Hagerstown Speedway.

Kessel's wife, Tammy, said riders in the flat-track race are expected to wear a special decal honoring Kessel, 51, who died last month when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a car on W.Va. 45.

The driver of the car has been charged with driving under the influence causing death.

Going forward, Kessel said she intends to devote a significant part of her life to promoting motorcycle awareness in memory of her husband, who was the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency's farm loan manager in five eastern West Virginia counties, including Berkeley, Morgan and Jefferson.

Kessel said she and her husband, who loved motorcycles, had been planning to attend the race. Gates open at 4 p.m.

"This is something that David and I did together," she said.
