Mail Call

August 02, 2010

"This is to the caller that called in Sunday's paper about the high grass. Well, I think the county needs to ride down Hogmaw Road because there's a house on Hogmaw Road that the grass is well over a knee-high length limit. ... There's a quite few number of distressed properties in Washington County where people still own the property but choose not to mow the grass. Can we please get somebody to come out in South County and ride around and look at these distressed properties? And I feel bad for the neighbors that have to live around this."

- Boonsboro

"Just a heads-up to the town of Smithsburg for their Trumpet newsletter. Just noticed it the other day, and I read an article in there about a police tip, talking about people having two registration plates on their vehicles. That's wonderful. I hope everybody enforces it. They should start a task for the state police and the county to see it's carried out. Also, they forgot one thing. People moving to Maryland have 60 days to get their vehicle plates over. Good job."

"I think if they're going to start legalizing marijuana, they should start legalizing prostitution, hire brothels, have them require health cards, pay taxes and put out a list. And I also think heavy tax on cigarettes - no. Put a heavy tax on alcohol. They're the ones that get behind the wheel and kill people. And if they don't, they're going to keep killing people. Your teenagers and college students are drinking, and everybody else. There should be a heavy tax put on alcohol - all alcoholic beverages. ... You could get quite a bit of tax money to pay for debt, health and everything else."

"I can't believe after all this time, these so-called high-priced economists can't figure out how to solve this mortgage crisis. It's a no-brainer. All they have to do is offer 50-year mortgages. Spread the payments out over 50 years, anybody can afford the mortgage that they're in. It's a no-brainer. The people are going to still get their money in the banks. They just have to wait a little while for it. And most people don't stay in their house that long anyhow. That way it gives everybody a breather. They can stay in their homes and still afford their mortgage payments."

"To the person calling in about Bush having the lowest unemployment in history, George Bush having the lowest unemployment in history: You might want to go back and check your facts. The reason I'm calling actually is it's time for America to start investing in North America; meaning Canada, America and even Mexico. Iran, North Korea, the Middle East do not want peace. We should invest in North America and I think that would help with the immigration status. We could build here in North America, we could create jobs here in North America and take care of our own."

- Hagerstown

"Here it is, election time again. How come the election signs? How about the county and the state roads make these people take their election signs off of the state roads and county right-of-way property? Put them on private property where they belong."

- Hagerstown

"Regarding property taxes going up each year, well, just let's think about this. Don't they already own it? I mean, don't they already own our property? We can't do anything on our property unless we get their permission or a permit. We don't even own our property. We just pay to live there. Goodness sakes."

"I wish some people would have more respect when they go use the handicapped bathroom. There are people with limited disabilities, like I have a physical disability. A bathroom is a bathroom, it's meant for anyone, but when you go into a business like a store or something, don't automatically think it's just for your kids to run around in. I mean, anyone needs to use the bathroom, but please respect there are people with physical disabilities that need the use of the bathroom and it's not a play area."

"I'm a first-time caller to Mail Call. I follow your Mail Call with a great interest, and I, too, have the same feeling that was just recently expressed about Tim Rowland's take on the immigration issue. He is a good writer about lightweight things, but he does not seem to be at all connected with the problems, real problems that are coming out of it. ... He needs to get a little more acquainted with what illegal immigration really means."

- Frederick, Md.

"I would like to congratulate the 11-12 Conococheague B Team All-Stars. They were awesome in both of their tournaments and everything, and we are very proud of all these boys that participated. They played nine games in 10 days, with all the heat. You guys deserve a medal and everything for your hard work. You played with all heart, and ... You're all winners, guys, and we are all very proud of you."
