Leitersburg Peach Festival to be held Aug. 14 and 15



The 31st annual Leitersburg Peach Festival will be Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 15, from noon to 5 p.m. at Leitersburg Ruritan Community Park (behind the Leitersburg Fire Hall).

The menu includes fresh peaches, in a variety of dishes, sausage, ham and barbecue beef sandwiches, fresh-cut french fries and funnel cakes.

The event will include craft vendors, petting zoo, antique tractors, quilt raffle, children's barrel train, peach pie contest and pony rides.

Admission is free. Free parking and a shuttle for the handicapped will be available.

The event is sponsored by the Leitersburg Ruritan Club, with proceeds to be used for community projects.

The TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077 recorded losses of 40 pounds for the week.

The best TOPS losers were Bea Myers and Kathy Freese. The best KOPS losers were Dorothy Smith, Mildred Hluchy and Louise Horst.

Myers won the Get-R-Done prize for TOPS and Horst won the accumulated monthly Get-R-Done prize for KOPS. Millie Toms won the Ha! Ha! prize. The no-no snack this week is candy.

Dorothy Martin presented the program titled "Fast Food - A Dieter's Nightmare." She talked about careful thought for better choices, special preparation and portion size. She said key words to look for are "grilled or baked" vs. "fried or breaded."

Carol LeClaire and Jean Betker will lead the August contest.

Planning continues for the picnic scheduled for Sept. 13. Food collection for the needy will end Aug. 16.

Longmeadow Lions Club news



Lions Club member Donna Jackman, District 22W diabetes awareness chairwoman, will be the guest speaker at the Longmeadow Lions Club meeting Thursday, Aug. 12. Jackman will talk about the latest information on advancements in diabetes research and developments to find a cure.

The meeting will be at the Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center, starting at 6:15 p.m. For reservations, call 301-739-2815 by Aug. 8.

Judy G., this week's thinner winner, led the chapter to a 15.6-pound net loss.

Lynn F. Little, family and consumer sciences educator with the Washington County Extension Office, led the program. She discussed reading labels on food products and emphasized three aspects: serving size and calorie content, nutritional information, and selecting the best foods for one's dietary and health needs.

Joyce will present the next program titled "Chair Exercises - Why Exercise, and How to Exercise When You Think You Can't."

Meetings are held Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road in Hagerstown. Weigh-in is at 8:45 a.m.

Chicken barbecue



Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave. in Hagerstown, will host a chicken barbecue Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10:30 a.m. until sold out.

One-quarter chicken with two vegetables costs $5. One-half chicken with two vegetables costs $8.
