Boyce would draw from volunteer experience if elected to school board

Washington County Board of Education candidate Michael Joe Boyce said he wants to get more businesses involved with the school system, and expand magnet and vocational programs.

Boyce's only child graduated from Washington County Technical High this past spring.

As a land surveyor and member of the Maryland Society of Surveyors, Boyce helped coordinate Trig Star, a mathematics competition in county high schools during the last school year.

Such business-school partnerships make classes more interesting and show how math lessons apply to the real world, which could generate more interest in the subject, Boyce said.

"I believe everybody should give back to the community," said Boyce, 41.

He said the best way for him to do that is to serve on the school board, which will have three seats open in the November general election.

The 11 school board candidates for the Sept. 14 primary will be narrowed to six for the general election.

School board members elected in November will serve four-year terms and earn $6,100 a year. If one of the newly elected members becomes board president, the annual salary for that person will be $6,200.

Boyce's family lived in Tulsa, Okla., while his son was in elementary school. There, Boyce said, he sat in for homeroom teachers when they had meetings and volunteered in science classes, helping students with dissection.

His son attended middle school in Frederick County (Md.) Public Schools before he and his wife, Kathryn, moved their family northwest of Hagerstown about four years ago, Boyce said.

Volunteering in the schools, including in Washington County, Boyce said he sees things that could be improved.

Boyce said he wants to see more efficiency in the school system so the maximum amount of taxpayer money is going to education in the classroom setting.

Boyce said his commute to work for ESE Consultants in Columbia, Md., would not interfere with his attending board meetings because he has a management position and has flexible hours.
