Jack Costa, 87, of Hagerstown, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2010, at his home.

Born Nov. 2, 1922, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Costa.

He was preceded in death by his beloved bride of 57 years, Kathryn M. Costa.

He is survived by his children, Jamie Costa of Nellysford, Va., Jackie Freeland of Winchester, Va., Dorrie Costa of Hagerstown, Chris Costa of Benecia, Calif., and Katy Costa-Sweeney of Hagerstown. Son-in law Arthur Porciuncula and daughter-in law Elizabeth S. Costa also survive him. In addition to his five beautiful children, he will be missed by his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His extended family includes sister, Margaret Cade; sister-in law, Sister Mary Aidan, O.S.B.; and many nieces and nephews.

Jack worked for Mack Trucks Inc. for 27 years, retiring as executive vice president of manufacturing in 1990. He was an active member in many community and civic affairs and a lifelong member and supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.


A decorated World War II flier, Jack was shot down over Germany and held as a prisoner of war. During his imprisonment, he was forced to march 1,000 kilometers across Germany before being liberated in 1945.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America and Hospice of Washington County.
