Kits to be distributed to poorly funded schools around the world

July 31, 2010

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - August brings time for shopping for school supplies.

This month, Mennonite Central Committee is asking residents to consider purchasing supplies for Mennonite Central Committee School Kits.

The committee sends school kits to Iraq, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, and poorly funded schools in Canada and the United States.

While large majorities of the kits are delivered to international settings, the committee's East Coast group also makes them available for domestic distribution.

One place that is using them is the Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association in the northeast part of Philadelphia.

Materials needed for kits include:

o Four-spiral or perforated notebooks

o Four unsharpened pencils

o One ruler (flat, flexible plastic)

o 12 colored pencils (in packaging)

o One large pencil eraser

School kits are distributed in a double drawstring cloth bag. You may sew the bag yourself, request bags from a committee collection center or donate contents that will be placed in the bag.

Drop off completed kits at any MCC location.
