Seniors eliminated at states

July 31, 2010

CAMBRIDGE, Md. -- The lone dark cloud remaining from Thursday's suspension was Friday's final outcome of the Maryland Senior State Tournament losers' bracket final.

Maugansville fell to Elkton 18-8, officially suffering elimination.

Elkton held a 17-7 lead in the top of the fifth inning when rain forced suspension on Thursday.

When play resumed Friday, Maugansville added a run on an RBI single by Troy Carbaugh. Elkton scored in the bottom of the fifth to close out the run-rule win in five innings.

Maugansville had nine hits in the game, including a homer from Dylan Dopson, who also had two RBIs along with Trevor Shuck.

Maugansville played Elkton even after surrendering 10 unearned runs in the first inning on six errors.

"It was just too much of a deficit to overcome," said manager Dan Dopson. "The kids had a great run this year."

After winning the district title which included a 1-0 win over Delmar in what Dopson described "one of the great games I've been a part of," Maugansville went on to grab an 8-4 win over Waldorf before losing to Talbot to fall into the losers' bracket.
