Man charged with falsely reporting robbery

July 31, 2010

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. --A man who claimed that he had been robbed of $800 in cash on July 16 in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Martinsburg admitted to police last week he lost the money gambling, according to a Martinsburg Police Department press release.

William Arthur Leland, 56, was charged with falsely reporting an emergency incident and was released on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond set by Berkeley County Magistrate W. Randy Smith, Detective Patrolman J.D. Luciano said.

On July 16, city police responded to Wal-Mart at 800 Foxcroft Ave. to investigate a reported robbery in the parking lot, Luciano said.

Leland said a white male put a revolver in his face, demanded cash and took $800 from him before fleeing toward Sears at Martinsburg Mall, Luciano said.

Surveillance video, however, revealed that no robbery happened, Luciano said.

Leland confessed Monday to making the false report and admitted he lost the $800 while gambling at a local establishment, Luciano said. The money belonged to him and his physically disabled sisters, who he told police he takes cares of, Luciano said.
