Birthday celebrations

Ebenezer AME Church celebrated the birthdays Sunday of its pastor, the Rev. Leroy Jackson, and church member Grace Snively.

Although no bells and whistles were included, the well-wishers were full of love as they bestowed the two with birthday cards, a birthday cake and punch.

Sister Grace's birthday was July 29 as she turned 97. The Rev. Jackson's birthday is July 31.

Community day

The men of Second Christian Church, 65 W. North Ave., will host a community appreciation day Saturday and will serve free food, including hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks.

There will also be a yard sale. It will cost $5 to rent table space or bring your items to sell and rent a table for $10.

The yard sale will include items such as children's clothes, dishes, toys and baked goods.

Vacation Bible School

Ebenezer AME Church will host its Vacation Bible School Aug. 9 to 13.

This year's theme is "Pick Up and Go."


All ages are welcome to attend.

Book club news

This month's SIS Book Club meeting has been postponed and the group will meet in September.

This will give everyone time to read the book and also a chance to think about book titles for the rest of the year.

Breakfast planned

The Men of Ebenezer AME Church, 40 Bethel St., will host a breakfast Saturday, Aug. 7, beginning at 8 a.m.

The menu will be pancakes, sausage, eggs, fried potatoes and onions, juice and coffee for $6.

Dinner planned Saturday, Aug. 7

Second Christian Church, 65 W. North Ave., will host a dinner Saturday, Aug. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The menu includes fried chicken wings or fried fish with potato salad, collard greens, roll, cake, and soda or water.

Barbecue to be held

Emmanuel United Methodist Church, at 802 Summit Ave., will host a chicken barbecue Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10:30 a.m. until sold out.

The meal costs $5 for a quarter chicken with two vegetables or $8 for a half chicken with two vegetables.

Outdoor movie set for Aug. 28

The last outdoor movie in the parking lot of Memorial Recreation Center will be Saturday, Aug. 28, at 8:45 p.m.

The movie "The Princess and The Frog" will be shown on the screen on the side of the building.

There will be prizes centered on the movie theme in celebration of this first summer of movies under the stars hosted by West Side Church.

Stop Smoking for Life

Free Stop Smoking for Life classes will be held at the Washington County Health Department starting Monday.

Classes will be Mondays and Thursdays for four weeks (morning and evening classes available).

Free nicotine patches will be available while supplies last.

Cessation classes for teens are also available.

South High celebration

South Hagerstown High School will be celebrating its 55TH birthday in 2011.

A meeting of the SHHS Alumni Association will be Thursday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. in the SHHS Media Center.

All classes are requested to send a representative to discuss this milestone celebration in 2011.

Input is needed from all Rebel Alumni classes in order for the event to be a success.

EBT class

The Washington County Health Department will offer a new fall class for EBT - a scientific solution for stress and weight.

This program is designed to help individuals struggling with weight issues and focuses on the root of the obesity problem - stress.

Classes will be held at Valley Grace Brethren Church, 17310 Gay Street, on Thursday evenings starting Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

An orientation class will be Thursday, Aug. 12, from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Pet event at mall

If you are interested in adopting a new pet and taking in a movie in the same day, then visit Regal Cinemas Valley Mall Stadium 16 Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The theater will host the Humane Society of Washington County for a day of fun and furry friends, which celebrates the release of the movie "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore."

The movie, which is a follow up to 2001's "Cats & Dogs," follows Kitty Galore, a hairless Sphynx cat, who is not only fed up with dogs but her fellow cat friends as well. She devises a plan to take over the world. Watch as cats and dogs join forces to stop her.

The event also will feature adoptable pets from the Humane Society.

Donations of pet-friendly items, such as food, toys and blankets will be accepted. Anyone making a donation to the Humane Society will receive a Revenge of Kitty Galore mini movie poster or face mask.
