Officer charged in alleged sexual encounter in W.Va. jail

July 30, 2010

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. --A man who was employed as a corrections officer at Eastern Regional Jail in May is accused of having sexual intercourse with an inmate, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Joshua D. Barrett, 27, of 125 April Lane, Hedgesville, W.Va., was arraigned Thursday on one felony count of imposition of sexual intercourse or intrusion on an incarcerated person, according to court records.

Autumn Harrison, who was incarcerated at the jail Thursday night, told a regional jail investigator earlier this month that the sexual encounter with the defendant happened on May 22 while she was cleaning a holding cell at the jail, according to court records.

Upon being asked by the defendant to perform a sexual act with him, Harrison told authorities that she consented on the condition that Barrett would get her some pills and cigarettes, according to court records.

Barrett, according to the inmate's statement, agreed, court records show. The inmate said they also engaged in a second sexual act shortly after the first encounter, according to court records.

It was not clear Thursday whether Barrett was still employed at the jail.
