Bone found in Bolivar backyard wasn't human

July 29, 2010

BOLIVAR, W.Va. -- A bone found Tuesday by a man who was digging around a tree in his backyard was not human, Harpers Ferry Police Chief Donald Buracker said Thursday morning.

Buracker said he was not told Wednesday afternoon by the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner what type of animal the bone was from, only that it was nonhuman.

The determination was made with the assistance of a Smithsonian Institution expert, Buracker said.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Donald Shirley had said Tuesday night that the pelvic-like bone could have come from either a human or a cow.

The bone was found at 44 Cleveland St. in Bolivar, W.Va., Shirley said.
