Maugansville shuts out Delmar

July 28, 2010

CAMBRIDGE, Md. -- C.J. Owings' RBI single in the third inning was all the offense Maugansville needed, as Nathan Murray and Dylan Dopson combined on a 1-0 shutout of Delmar in the losers' bracket of the Maryland Senior League State Tournament on Tuesday at J. Walter Park.

Murray worked six scoreless innings and Dopson struck out the side in the seventh after a leadoff walk.

"It was awesome," Maugansville manager Dan Dopson said. "Murray's been our main guy all season and he excelled tonight. He managed his pitches and when he got in trouble he kept his cool. Dylan hadn't pitched since the regular season and came in and did a nice job."

Alijah Benson walked and went to third on Sergio Galvan's single before Owings delivered the game-winning hit.

"(Delmar) had an ace on the mound, and at this level the pitch counts are so important," Dan Dopson said. "For the first three innings until we scored, we were measuring who won the inning by who threw the fewer pitches."

Maugansville will face Waldorf tonight at 5:30 in the losers' bracket semifinal. Maugansville beat Waldorf 8-4 in a first-round game played over two days because of rain Sunday night.

"Monday was hard on them, playing two games in the same day and finishing a game we started the day before," Dan Dopson said. "We were all emotionally and physically drained. We've watched (Waldorf) play and have played them, and we have a pretty good idea of their strengths and they have a good idea of ours. We just need to keep our heads in the game. These kids can play with anybody if they're focused."
