RCI inmate with blunt force trauma to the head was taken to hospital

July 28, 2010

A Roxbury Correctional Institution inmate was taken to Washington County Hospital Wednesday afternoon after being found with blunt force trauma to the head in a housing unit at the prison, a Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokeswoman said.

The condition of the 37-year-old victim, who was found at about 1 p.m., was not immediately known, Correctional Services spokeswoman Erin Julius said.

The tier of the housing unit in which the incident occurred was locked down Wednesday while an internal investigative unit examined the scene, Julius said. The rest of the prison continued to operate normally, she said.

Julius said authorities have a suspect, but he had not been charged as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim was serving a seven-year sentence for possession with intent to distribute drugs, Julius said.
