WEST POINT, Va. - The Rev. Dr. Norman E. West Jr., 82, died July 12, 2010, in Richmond, Va.

Born in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of Norman E. West Sr. and Evelyn Elizabeth Nichols.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1945.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

After a short period in the U.S. Army Air Force, he enrolled at Lynchburg College. He pursued his graduate education at Lexington Theological Seminary. In 1977, he returned to Lexington Theological Seminary, where he received his doctor of ministry degree. While at Lynchburg College, he met and married Mary Vallie Elliott.

Norman served as chaplain for the West Point Fire Department and Rescue Squad for over 30 years; served on the West Point town council, and in the Kiwanis Club; served as vice chair and chair on the board of Rappahannock Community College; served for five years on the board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Virginia, acting as regional moderator, 1987 to 1989.


He leaves his wife of 61 years, Mary Vallie; daughter, Terry Hey and husband Rick; son, Timothy; granddaughters, Megan Hey Bladen and Jessica West Musante; great-grandson, Damian Musante; a sister, Norma Jean Warren, and husband Wayne, of Greencastle, Pa.; and two brothers, Jack, and wife Anne West, Spartanburg, S.C., and Donald, and wife Joann West, Hagerstown, Md.
