PONY Stars zone in to win West Region title

BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Hagerstown PONY 14 All-Stars' loss on Saturday was just a prelude to a hat trick of victories on Sunday.

After losing to Tri-T National 8-5 in the winners' bracket final, Hagerstown pulled out three wins to capture the East Zone West Region title and it included two wins over Tri-T National.

In the championship game, Hagerstown pulled out a 12-6 victory as Dylan Stouffer rapped four hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Kenny Mack, Andrew Yacyk and Dalton Jobe had two hits apiece and John Britton and Nck Sauble combined on the mound to hold down Tri-T.

Hagerstown reached the final with a 5-4 win over Tri-T as J.R. Rinehart pitched a complete-game with eight strikeouts. Yacyk had a home run and three RBIs and Derek Herbert added three hits.

In Sunday's first game, Hagerstown blanked Chambersburg 'B' 14-0 as Sauble and Ryan Boward combined on a no-hitter, striking out nine. Kenny Mack had a grand slam among his three hits, Yacyk homered and drove in three runs, Ryan Byard had a home run and two RBIs and Stouffer had two hits and three RBIs.


Hagerstown will compete beginning Friday in the East Zone Tournament in Woonsocket, R.I., with a game at 5:30 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.


Conococheague loses

EDGEWATER, Md. -- The Conococheague Junior All-Stars were eliminated in the Maryland State Tournament on Tuesday in a 2-0 loss to Talbot.

Royals open 2-0

CHATSVILLE, Ga. -- The Maryland Royals 19U opened pool play competition in the Dizzy Dean Tournament with two victories on Monday.

The Royals belted Ragland, Ala., 11-1 as Jacob Smith twirled a 3-hitter.

Smith was backed at the plate by four Clear Spring graduates. Jordan Thurber and Brandon Glazer each smacked home runs and Joel Rowe and Kyle Crist added two hits apiece.

The Royals also beat Tennessee 5-1 as Jay Shafer had a complete-game 3-hitter, striking out seven.

Thurber had three hits, including two home runs and Crist added a triple.

Baker in 16th

FARMINGTON, Pa. -- Waynesboro graduate Derek Baker, a former Tri-State Junior golf Association award winner, was in a tie for 16th place following the first round of the 97th Pennsylvania Amateur Championship on Monday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Baker shot a 1-over-par 73 which included a 1-under 35 on the front nine. A double-bogey 7 on a par 5 on the back nine hurt Baker's standing.

The tournament continues today with Cory Siegfried, of Philadelphia Country Club, holding the lead at 6-under-par 66.
