Around Funkstown

Going, going ...

So where did July go? Someone please tell me how all of a sudden it's almost August? Do you realize that youngsters head back to school in just three weeks?

Congratulations to Jeffrey Cooper of Funkstown, who graduated in May from Virginia Military Academy. Jeffrey graduated with a bachelor of science in chemistry with honors and a minor in international studies with concentration in mechanical engineering.

I am quite frankly exhausted just listing what he accomplished. I'm certain his parents, Jean and Jeff Cooper, are very proud. Another young man from Funkstown does great.

SHHS Alumni

Are you a graduate of South Hagerstown High School? The reunion committee is looking for representatives from past graduating classes to help plan the 55th school anniversary. A meeting will take place Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. in the media center.

Yard sale

With summer winding down, so are the yard sales. Let me tell you of a great one that you don't want to miss. St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, across from South End Shopping Center, will hold a yard sale Saturday, Aug. 7, from 7 a.m. to noon. Proceeds benefit various church expenses.

Baby-sitter training

The American Red Cross is offering baby-sitter training at its Conrad Court location Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The class costs $45 and financial aid is available.

The classes are open to those ages 11 to 15.

The classes offer information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care to children in the absence of a parent or legal guardian. Participants gain skills in leadership and professionalism, and learn basic care safety, safe play and first aid.

To register, call 301-739-0171, ext. 213.

1950s get-together

What do poodle skirts and saddle shoes make you think of?

If it's good times spent at the Funkstown Soda Fountain in the early 1950s, then you need to read on.

Calling all those who hung out at the Funkstown Fountain: It's time to get together and reminisce.

The ladies from that era get together twice a year for a luncheon and would like to invite others from those days to their October get-together.
