MOUNT CRAWFORD, Va. - Henry Kuhns Horst, 84, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 24, 2010, at his home in Mount Crawford, Va.

Born April 5, 1926, in Paramount, Md., near Hagerstown, Md., he was the youngest child of Henry E. and Lydia Kuhns Horst.

On New Years Day in 1948, he married the former Beatrice Elizabeth Garrett, who survives.

In 1960, he was ordained as deacon at Gaithersburg Mennonite Church in Gaithersburg, Md. In 1973, they moved their family to the Shenandoah Valley. He was a member and retired deacon of Bank Mennonite Church in Dayton, Va.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Charlton; and two brothers, David and Aaron Horst.

He is survived by six children, Mildred L. Ranck and husband, Ken, of Mount Crawford, Linda H. Weaver and husband, Cleo, of Lancaster, Va., Gerald (Jerry) Horst and wife, Diane, of Harrisonburg, Va., Lois A. Knicely and husband, Marion, of Harrisonburg, Nathan Horst and wife, Phyllis, of Weyers Cave, Va., and Joyce E. Horst of McGaheysville, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Maria Eby of Hagerstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, Bridgewater, Va.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bank Mennonite Church, Dayton, with Brother Charles Heatwole presiding. Final interment will follow in Bank Mennonite Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the friends and family who came to offer support and spread cheer over the past couple of months and to the RMH Hospice for helping make Henry's final days comfortable and peaceful.
