July 25, 2010

EDGEWATER, Md. -- Rising Sun scored the tying and winning runs on bases-loaded walks to score an 8-7 victory over Conococheague on Saturday in the first round of the Maryland Junior League State Tournament at South River High School.

Conococheague will play in the losers' bracket on Monday at 2 p.m. against the loser of today's game between Talbot and West Salisbury.

"We did some things well and we did some things that were crucially negative," Conococheague manager Jamie Martin said. "For the most part we played a decent game, played a pretty good game."

Rising Sun took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three hits and a walk.

Conococheague answered in the top of the third wth Casey Shank's three-run double for a 3-2 lead. Rising Sun answered with three runs in the bottom half on four hits and a hit batter to retake the lead.

Conococheague cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth on Trey French's RBI fielder's choice, but an error gave Rising Sun a 6-4 lead in the bottom half.

A two-run fifth inning that included Alex Miller's single, three walks and a hit batter pulled Conococheague into a 6-6. A Martin single and three more walks in the top of the sixth made it 7-6, but a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half tied the game again and another one in the seventh won the game for Rising Sun.

Rising Sun finished with 12 hits compared with seven for Conococheague.

"It was a tough loss, but I think we'll be OK," Jamie Martin said. "We made the road tougher on ourselves, but roads aren't meant to be smooth all the time."
