Rodney Wesley Rippeon, 62, of 1029 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at his home.

Born March 2, 1948, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Glenn R. and Grace Dodd Rippeon.

He graduated in 1966 from Frederick High School, where he excelled in football and baseball and was active in the theater. In 1971, he received a B.A. in theater from the University of Maryland.

He was employed by First Data in its sales and customer services division, and previously was employed in auto and real estate sales in Frederick for 20 years.

He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed hunting as a younger man. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing, cooking on his grill, winter walks and visiting the Outer Banks. He was known as an avid reader and he especially enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of history, wildlife and natural phenomena with friends and family. He also had been an active member of Governor Thomas Johnson High School Band Boosters.


He is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Rippeon of Philadelphia, Pa.; one son, Andrew W. Rippeon and wife, Lisa, of Buffalo, N.Y.; three sisters, Susan Stull of Hagerstown, Patricia Miller of Bendersville, Pa., and Barri Avallone of Frederick; numerous nieces and nephews; and many longtime friends.

He previously attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Eric Norgard will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or American Heart Association.
