Mail Call

July 24, 2010

"I have worked all my life, and thankfully I was able to save a few dollars. With these savings I invested in a few shares of Exxon, Verizon, Kimberly Clark and others; some winners, and many losers. I keep hearing people blaming the rich corporations for what ails us. Please realize that these corporations are made up of many smaller (companies)."

"Why was the big plane flying low over Washington County all the time? That's what several Mail Callers have asked in the column, and after reading this week about the local ... plane that's heading to the Gulf to map the oil spill, I was curious ... are they looking for oil in Washington County?"

- Funkstown

"We need to find a way to clean up Washington County, Hagerstown, and then we need to look forward to the 2012 elections. Whether we're longtime Republicans, Democrats, we need to vote the best people into office, even if it requires voting across our regular party lines, and we need to put the best people in office to get our country moving in the right direction. We need to bring jobs to our city and to our county, and we need to find a way to keep the Hagerstown Suns, and we cannot afford to lose them."

"Today my daughter, granddaughter, sister and myself were at the Christmas store in Hagerstown. My sister, who is diabetic, had a low-sugar episode, and I just wanted to thank all the wonderful people; shoppers, help, and manager who came to our assistance."

"This is for the Clear Spring caller making the comment about someone going through a yellow light and hitting them. If you was hit when somebody was going through a yellow light the other way, then you were going through on a red."

- Hagerstown

"This is about the extension of the unemployment pay. First of all, Obama didn't need the Republicans to pass that, and he knew that, so that was a big fat propaganda thing on his part. Second of all, the Republicans are for extending it, but only if we pay for it by using money from the stimulus that hasn't been spent yet. Now, last time it was extended, President Obama was so happy about doing it that way. This time he's not. ... He doesn't care if he spends your money. Maybe you should vote Republican, and stop spending our grandchildren's money."

"A person called Mail Call and said there needs to be a little kindness expressed in Arizona. Many of you jumped on that person with both feet, namely saying God says obey the law. Jesus tried to obey the law, but he failed. He was ultimately crucified for violating Caesar's law. Jesus also said, 'The greatest of these is love.'"

- Halfway

"This is to the person that was out on Saturday night, breaking windows out of vehicles. I hope you had fun doing that, because now there's a lot of us out here in the Smithsburg area that have to put new windows in our car, all because of one person out here being the way they are, of - knowing, you know, we have to pay for this stuff. But the rocks was thrown through the window and our neighbors heard this. ... I hope you get caught."

"Oh, good, more Democrat ranting by the usual callers. The Republicans are all childish, ill-tempered, selfish, greedy and cruel. ... Please do continue spewing your hate, not only because I find your rants quite entertaining, but also because they're so partisan, vicious and simplistic that they won't convince anyone who doesn't already share your extreme ideology. ... Whatever left-wing partisan Democrats accuse someone of doing, it's sure to be something they themselves are guilty of. I do appreciate knowing what you're up to."

"Just ask yourself one question: What language are you expected to speak when in France?"

"Let's boil this weight gain subject down to the facts. My parents and their friends treated eating as a sport. After I had two babies, I gained 30 pounds over 30 years. My body mass was too high. My parents and their friends died too young. Love of food is a misplaced affection. I kept one food - ice cream - as a treat, and trimmed my daily diet to a protein, a good carbohydrate and lots of fiber. Know your serving sizes. Avoid temptations."

- Hagerstown

"I was reading the article about the teachers going to the Barbara Ingram school, on page A3 in today's paper, July 21, and would really like to know how many freshmen, sophomores, etc., are returning to this school."

- Hagerstown

"This is for the people that live in the big housing development in Meadows Green, on Route 66. I know most of you people are from the city, where you didn't care how much water you used, but remember, you are on wells now, and septic systems - especially the wells I'm calling about. You're watering your lawns, you're using water, and it's drought season and your well will go dry. And the main reason I'm concerned is I am one - have a well, too, and live in the area. So please stop watering your lawns and be careful using one of our natural resources, our water."
