Mail Call

July 23, 2010

"We are elderly and have a fixed income. This call is for the people who determine the assessments and tax rate on our properties. Mine and many others have been raised about 16 to 18 percent, when in reality they have reduced that amount or more."

- Fairplay

"I do not care what kind of math you use, the bottom line is if the state or county think my property is worth less to me this year than last year, I should be paying less taxes on it this year, not more. They are less, but I have to pay more. Please don't tell me it is my fault because of who I vote for. I vote every time for whoever seems to say they will make a change to the way things are run. All these people are the same, you can not believe what they say. What more can you do but take a person at their word?"

"Ah, yes, Herbert Hoover getting the blame for FDR. FDR spent more phony money than all presidents before his time. If it would not have been for World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan, we would still be paying for FDR. Then came Bush spending like Dems. Now comes Obama, 'The buck stops here, it's not my fault,' that has dwarfed all presidents combined. Have no fear, though, it's Bush's fault."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I'd like to comment on the gentleman, I read in today's paper about unemployment. He said you are given unemployment because you worked and you paid into the system. I'd like to correct him. He did work, but he didn't pay into the system. Employees never pay unemployment. Unemployment is paid totally by the employer."

- Hagerstown

"So someone please explain that if you can't find a job, no one calls you for interview or any kind of interest, you lost your unemployment benefits, you don't receive any income, including child support, and you are a single mother with no one else in the household to help or support you, how can you pay all the bills? Any suggestions?"

- Hagerstown

"'Jan Brewer for president 2012.' Sounds great."

- Hagerstown

"Thank you, Tim Rowland, for making sense of current issues regarding immigration (page A8, 07/18/10). I am so very weary of reading all the recent hateful comments. I fully agree that it is time that we get back to our true American cultural values that this nation was built upon."

- McConnellsburg, Pa.

"Tim Rowland. ... He writes about immigration, but he doesn't mention 'illegal' immigration, and his comment about Arizona teaching immigrants that it is 'American' to harass people based on their looks only reflects his ignorance of the situation in Arizona."

- Hagerstown

"I am an Army veteran who has worked my entire adult life. Back in November I lost my job due to the economy. During my unemployment, I have been diagnosed with a medical condition which does not allow me to return to work unless corrected. I don't drink, nor do I take any illicit drugs. My unemployment has just expired and I am currently seeking assistance through the VA, DSS and SSA. Yes, I feel entitled to an unemployment extension, and no, I will not subscribe to your suggestion that others like me take a drug test. Partisan bickering and useless suggestions are not going to get me or our economy back on its feet."

- Cavetown

"Our country needs a hero. In the past when the economy has been bad, we had a president who was able to turn things around and we emerged living the good life again. Hopefully there is someone out there who will get elected that fits the bill before too much damage is done."

- Hagerstown

"Did anyone else notice any of those often-reported animal reactions to the earthquake? I had actually gotten up a few minutes before it hit to feed my dog, and he showed no reaction, which is odd because he's a great watchdog and usually very alert to just about anything. But it could have been because I was getting his food out and that was all he was interested in. Anyway, I'm really curious to know about other animal owners' experiences."

- Frederick, Md.

"This is about the caller from Hagerstown who said when Clinton was in there, reason he was in the black was because he had a Republican Congress, and the reason Bush, he had a war and a hurricane. Well, Bush is the one who caused the war, and the hurricane, that's natural."

- Williamsport area

"Get real - the reason Bush went out in the red is because he was hit with a war and a hurricane? Give me a break. He's the one that started the war. There weren't any weapons of mass destruction. I repeat, there weren't weapons of mass destruction, and that country had nothing to do with 9/11. So get it straight, please. And for you people that think that they shouldn't vote for unemployment, there's something real wrong with you. This isn't the America I grew up in."

- Hagerstown
