Mail Call

July 22, 2010

"This is in response to the woman who was talking about unemployment and welfare, and how they should drug screen all of us. I think that is totally inappropriate. Not everybody that gets state assistance does drugs. There are some of us who actually do what we have to do, that actually hit those streets every day and look for a job. ... There are people out there that work day in, day out, making minimum wage, that have to choose between a place to live and electricity."

- Hagerstown

"I'm wondering - maybe someone can steer me in the right direction - I've contacted the city numerous times about people living here with out-of-state license plates. And of course, I usually end up getting the same message: Contact the city police. Well, the city police don't have anything to do with this, as far as I know. I called City Hall, and I've done this for over a year now. Especially just on one street, there's seven or eight people that have been living here with out-of-state tags on their vehicles."

"If Barack Obama cannot restore the hope of one person in the Gulf area, how can he restore the hope of America?"

- Hagerstown

"My wife had jury duty, which is stupid. She lost a whole day's pay for the lousy $15 that they give. Then she misunderstood where she had to park, her car got towed, and ... going to rip us off for $175 to tow her car from Baltimore Street to Frederick Street. The City of Hagerstown said they could charge that. I think that Washington County and Hagerstown ought to have a designated parking area for all jurors."

- Williamsport area

"I have two things I'd like to say. One is they should randomly drug test people on welfare, and if they test positive they should be penalized in a way, something set up by the commission. Secondly, people who draw unemployment should be prorated at like maximum in the first six months, and every six months after that it drops, say $100 per month."

- Hagerstown

"You'll never hear me accuse most people of being real intelligent. After all, they elected Obama president, and while I'm on the subject, I would like to know exactly what he did as a community organizer. I mean, that could be a million different things. Apparently whatever he did didn't give him much grooming to be president. I hate to say it, but I told you so."

- Sharpsburg

"I just want to thank The Herald-Mail. Back in the early - the '50s and the early '60s, I coached Little League for a lot of years - a lot of years - and I could understand the kids, how they react, and I want to thank you for putting all these pictures in the paper of these Little League series, their playoff games or whatever, and I know there's going to be a lot of happy kids. So I want to thank you again. I thought it was a great deal, and I enjoyed looking at them and reading the captions and the stories, and see these happy faces on these Little Leaguers. So thanks again, and keep up the good work."

"The Herald-Mail certainly does show its bias, by having 'Congress passes Wall Street reform bill' under 'Investigators looking into cause of I-70 accident.' 'Congress passes Wall Street reform bill' should have been a flaming headline."

- Hagerstown

"I heard about the earthquake in the Germantown area. I think they need to study more about the earthquakes, especially in areas that are not prone to have them. More research is needing to be done, especially with this most recent earthquake in the Tri-State area."

- Hagerstown

"This is to Berkeley Springs, W.Va., speaking about the fifth commandment. It sounds to me as though your parents made a mistake, and that you have not forgiven them for that mistake. And you will make mistakes as parents, too, if you already haven't made them. We all do; we're all human beings, and forgiveness should be the ultimate goal for all of us."

- Hagerstown

"I agree with Leonard Pitts' comment, basketball we used to enjoy watching and playing, no more do we enjoy it."

- Sharpsburg

"I'm calling concerning these doctors. You know, you can have your appointment for every two weeks, and then when you go to them and you got something a little serious wrong with you, then they have an associate show up. I think insurance people should be investigating this on these people. They're just milking the insurance company. That's all they're doing, and I think it's wrong."

- Hagerstown

"My real estate taxes go up every year. Next step, they will take my property."

- Washington County

"I think people should be positive on the things that are happening in downtown Hagerstown ... rather than focusing on the negative. We have a lot of good things that are going for the new named City Center, even with this downturn in the economy."

- Hagerstown
