Firefighters convention to be held in Hancock

July 22, 2010

HANCOCK - The Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association 109th Convention is planned for Aug. 4 to 7 in Hancock.

Hancock Volunteer Fire Co is hosting the convetion this year.

In 1901, fire chiefs from the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia met in Chambersburg, Pa., for the purpose of adopting a uniform hose coupling and to develop a mutual aid system along the Cumberland Valley Railroad.

Stretching from Harrisburg, Pa., to Harrisonburg, Va., the Cumberland Valley Railroad served as an artery for trade between the four states through which its rights of way traverse. The meeting was so successful that one year later the firemen of Winchester, Va., invited all of the firemen in the region to attend demonstrations and an organizational meeting for a new organization, the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association.

Today the CVVFA has evolved into a family friendly organization, fostering an environment where fire service members and their families can socialize during meetings and conventions. The CVVFA boasts an individual membership of over 1100, with another 100 organizational members on its rolls. A number of career firefighters are proud members. The leaders of the CVVFA are elected by the membership, with Officers and Directors representing the five Mid-Atlantic States where the CVVFA is registered to do business. The CVVFA is a home to all who value fire service progress and the strong bond between firefighters everywhere.

The convention includes a golf tournament at Whitetail Golf Resort, meetings, training, a memorial service, and a picnic.

During Friday's Presidents Council Meeting, leaders from all the state firemen associations get together to discuss what is going on in their respective states. A banquet on Friday night includes the installation of new CVVFA officers. The convention concludes with a parade in Hancock that begins at noon on August 7.

The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is providing welcome packets for the convention attendees. The CVB is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help attract visitors to Hagerstown and Washington County.
