WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mr. Dirk Gregory Burns, 54, of 12138 Snyder Ave. in Waynesboro, Pa., passed away Monday, July 19, 2010, at his home. His death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.

Born May 27, 1956, in Waynesboro, he was the son the late James E. Burns and D. Evaline (Wolfe) Burns Cook of Waynesboro. He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro and Rouzerville area.

Dirk was a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the class of 1974. He later received an associate degree in diesel mechanics from Williamsport Area Community College in 1976.


He and his wife of 31 years, Mrs. Gloria A. (Punt) Burns, were married May 26, 1979, in Waynesboro. They have lived at their present residence for the past 30 years.

Dirk was employed by W.J. Miller Texaco, Mark Grover Landscaping in Modesto, Calif., Frick Co. in Waynesboro, and Interstate Truck Equipment in Hagerstown, Md. On May 1, 2000, he began work at Mack Trucks/Volvo Powertrain in Hagerstown and currently was working as a mechanic group leader in the engineering department. He became union chairman for UAW Local 1247 on July 1, 2002.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Sons of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 and Eagles Club Inc., all of Waynesboro; and the Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association.

Dirk was a devoted husband and father. His passions were Penn State football, gardening, hunting, his new truck, working for Mack Trucks and his role as union chairman.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his daughter, Chasity L. Burns of Alexandria, Va.; his brother, Dana E. Burns of Blue Ridge Summit; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. John McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends from Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
