July 21, 2010

MARCH 20, 1943-JULY 18, 2010

Brenda Joyce Burlin, 67, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 18, 2010, at her home in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Born March 20, 1943, in Somerville, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Farley.

She retired from her position as an assistant librarian at the Shepherdstown Public Library.

Brenda was a much-loved member of the Shepherdstown community, where she was valued for her beauty, grace, courage and generosity. Her family would like to thank the community for supporting her so lovingly during her final illness.

A woman of many talents and interests, Brenda lived for many years in New York City and later in Sharpsburg, Md., Frederick, Md., and Bennington, Vt., before settling in Shepherdstown in 2001. In describing her life, she once said, "Some people have checkered pasts. Mine is plaid." It was that very plaidness that enabled her to extend empathy and kindness to everyone she met and befriended.

Brenda is survived by her two sons, John Conklin and Jim Conklin; her sister, Betty Farley; her grandson, Thomas Conklin; her daughter-in-law, Pat Conklin; and a host of friends on three continents.

In one of her last acts of generosity, she left her remains to the Anatomy Gifts Registry.

A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Friends will be notified.

Memorial donations may be made to Shepherdstown Public Library, P.O. Box 278, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.
