Mail Call

July 20, 2010

"I'd like to say 'Great job' by the South Mountain 11- and 12- A team, though they lost the tournament. Though they lost and didn't go any further, they had some great games and played hard through the tournaments. They have another tournament coming up, and I wish them luck with that."

- Rohrersville

"Saw this on the back of a car: 'Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? No one now, thanks to BP.' Thought it was kind of representative of what's happening down in the Gulf."

- Hagerstown

"This is to whoever keeps taking things off my grandson's grave at Angel Land. He was only here for a month and suffered the whole time he did. Why don't you go out and try and enjoy the life that he never got, instead of stealing from him? Let him rest in peace, please."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to Wednesday, July 14's call from Boonsboro. It says she's a Christian and she doesn't support the Arizona law with immigration, and God's not happy with us. Excuse me, I'd love to know what Christian, what church you belong to, because the last time I thought and read my Bible, God wants us to obey the laws."

"Hey, Leonard Pitts, sounds like you're a little mad because old lamestream media, Fox News, and old Glenn Beck are letting all of us know what you and your left-wingers are up to."

- Hancock

"I have my child registered with the Maryland CHIP program, which they took her fingerprints and took a video and photographs of her, but I heard something somewhere about children can get microchips, like they do in pets, which children - that would be great. If someone has any information about it I'd appreciate it."

- Hagerstown

"In reply to yesterday's article on 'Ehrlich pledges support to farmers,' what a joke. Farmers occupy 75 percent of the land, but Mr. Ehrlich states that they are not responsible for any pollution to the Chesapeake Bay. The old cliche that farmers are the original environmentalists is way past its expiration date. And as for Maryland's cover crop program, as currently operating it is a total waste of $15 million of our flush tax per year, for a practice that goes in late and needs to be planted every year."

- Hagerstown

"Just wanted people to know I went to Greencastle Sidewalk Days, Waynesboro Jubilee Day, Rouzerville Lions Club car show, and ... Blue Ridge Summit ice cream social, and did not have to pay $5 to park. Really had a good time. And by the way, I write my own letters and sign them, not like some people who sign letters other people write."

- Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

"I feel sorry for the Hagerstown woman whose husband is unemployed and he has used 20 weeks of his unemployment benefits, but she is attacking the wrong people. Taking from the poor, welfare people, will not help. They are not your enemy. The Republicans in Congress and the rich corporations are."

- Halfway

"How do the mayor and council in Funkstown think people can afford to donate money to fix up town hall? The water bills have tripled, property taxes have gone up, and we now have to pay to reserve the pavilions at the park. Don't they realize a lot of us live on fixed income? Why don't they use the extra money they will get with the property taxes to fix it up? ... Soon a lot of us won't be able to afford to live in this beautiful, friendly little town."

- Funkstown

"This is to the nice lady who called and said she was Christian, and why are we treating the people in Arizona so badly. Well, that law is not a - in other words, it is a law that they can stop people if they committed another crime and ask for their papers. So Gov. Brewer is doing the right thing. And I ask this caller how she would feel if someone came across the border and killed members of (her family). God did not intend for people to stand and let people walk over them and run over their families and their homes."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"I am calling about the freeze on unemployment benefits. People do not understand that the employer pays the unemployment benefits, not the government. They actually pay to the state and they pay to the federal government. Since a lot of companies do not have jobs to give to people, that is why the amount is down. They don't have workers, then unemployment can't be paid in to the general fund for the state and to the federal government."

- Knoxville

"There was just a comment in Mail Call about the recent fire tragedy in Black Rock, and they indicated that it clearly points out the need to outlaw fireworks in the state of Maryland for anybody that doesn't possess a pyrotechnics permit. That's just what we need, more government regulations and more government interference."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling as a Republican. I think it's despicable, that sign they have out in Iowa that has Hitler and Stalin and Obama. What is wrong with you Tea Partiers? You're making us look bad. Take that sign down. These people were evil. You have to have respect for our president. You people don't even have respect for yourselves."

- Hagerstown
