July 17, 2010

The Washington County Sheriff's Department is seeking assistance from the public in finding a man who robbed a taxi cab driver near Martin L. "Marty" L. Snook Memorial Park on June 30.

The cab driver picked up a man near Cleveland Avenue before 5 a.m. who asked to be driven to Williamsport, deputies said. While en route, the man changed his mind and asked to be taken to Halfway Boulevard, deputies said.

The driver then was told to stop near the park, but when he told the man how much the fare was, the man put a sharp object to the driver's neck and demanded money, deputies said. After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, the man fled on foot, deputies said.

While riding in the cab, the man told the driver he was from Montgomery County and was in Hagerstown visiting his child's mother, deputies said.

The man spoke with a southern accent and was wearing a white tank top shirt and gray sweat shorts, deputies said.

Anyone with information about the man may call Detective Casey Barnes of the Washington County Sheriff's Department at 240-313-2885.
