Maryland District 1, which encompasses Washington County, will host two Little League Baseball state tournaments beginning Saturday.

The 9-10 state tournament will be played at South Mountain Little League in Boonsboro, while the 10-11 state tournament will be played at West End Little League in Hagerstown's Hellane Park.

The 9-10 tournament begins with opening-round games at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Clear Spring, the District 1 champion, will play the District 3 champion from Washington, D.C., in the 5 p.m. game.

Play continues in the double-elimination tournament through Thursday, with an "if necessary" game scheduled for Friday.

For the first time, the state 9-10 champion will advance to a regional tournament. The East Region tournament will be played in Cranston, R.I., from July 31 to Aug. 8. There is no World Series for the 9-10 division.

The 10-11 state tournament opens Saturday with games at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. The District 1 champion, Halfway, draws a first-round bye and will play in the winners' bracket semifinal Sunday at 2 against the winner of Saturday's game between the District 4 (Baltimore) and District 5 (Northern Maryland) champions.

Play continues in the double-elimination tournament through Thursday, with an "if necessary" game scheduled for Friday.

The state tournament is the final level of competition for the 10-11 division.
