Smithsburg Lions Club holds Charter Night



The Smithsburg Lions Club celebrated its 65th Charter Night on May 26 at the Mountain Gate Restaurant.

Club President Jack Wenthe welcomed members and guests, along with District 22-W Gov. Robert Disinger and his wife, Eileen, First Vice District Gov. Richard Liebno, Second Vice District Gov. Steven Finger and Cabinet Secretary Paul Cannada.

Wenthe made the following award presentations:

Joe Caha - two-year tie tac tab; Bonnie Schaller - two-year tab; Carrie Dayhoff - three-year tab; Mike Dayhoff - three-year tab; Terry Stevens - three-year tab; Betty Warrenfeltz - three-year tab; Diane Wenthe - five-year tab, five-year pin; Jeff Weaver - six-year tab; Barbara Weaver - six-year tab; Don Warrenfeltz - 11- year tab; Tony Valente - 12-year tab; Jack Wenthe - 13-year tab; Elisa Sharp - 13-year tab; Fred Huntzberry - 18-year tab; George Souders - 17-year tab; Ray Killian - 24-year tab; Dick Hembrock - 25-year tab, 25-year pin; Nick Shillinger - 27-year tab; Jerry Weaver - 28- year tab; Frank Schaller - 31-year tab, 30-year pin; and Charles Fishack - 54-year tab.

Disinger updated the club on the events and activities of District 22-W and reported on upcoming events.

Lion Charles Fishack, who served as president of the club in 1961 and 1962 and as district governor in 1965 and 1966, along with Disinger, rededicated the club charter.

The Smithsburg Lions Club serves the Smithsburg and surrounding communities.

Pen Mar Park concerts continue



Organist Jim Powers will perform Sunday at Pen Mar Park from 2 to 5 p.m. as the summer concert series continues.

Welty Church of the Brethren, at 13465 Greensburg Road, will hold its SonQuest Rainforest Vacation Bible School July 26 to 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event will include Bible stories, crafts, games, skits, music and snacks.

Cascade Elementary



Congratulations to Jason Smith Jr. who was honored for his Americanism Essay titled "What is My Role as a U.S. Citizen?" He took second-place in Class II, grades five and six in the Western Maryland District of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Maryland Inc. for the school year.

The ceremony to honor the winners was held May 16 in Taneytown, Md.

The school is proud of Jason for winning the award and representing the Western Maryland District of the American Legion Auxiliary.
