Burglary, assault reported at Hagerstown residence today

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating a reported burglary and assault that occurred early Wednesday in Hagerstown.

At 12:20 a.m., a burglary was reported at a residence in the 1800 block of Abbey Lane, deputies said in an e-mailed release.

A female living there said she awoke to a noise inside her home and discovered that an unknown man had forced entry into the residence, deputies said.

The intruder physically assaulted her, then fled on foot, the release said.

The woman suffered minor injuries, the release said.

The sheriff's office, Maryland State Police and the Hagerstown Police Department searched the area but were unable to find the man.

The intruder was described as a male in his 20s, with dreadlocks and wearing a white tank-top shirt.

Anyone with information about this incident or who might have witness suspicious activity in the area prior to the incident is asked to call the sheriff's office at 301-791-3020.
