Concordia Lutheran Church getting new pastor

HAGERSTOWN -- Pastor Emil Yngvi Gretarsson will be installed Sunday as pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church at 17906 Garden Lane in Hagerstown.

The Rite of Installation will be conducted at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Jon Diefenthaler, president of the southeastern district of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Gretarsson was born in Long Island, N.Y., and spent his formative years there. He graduated from the University of Buffalo in 2004 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering.

Following graduation, he worked for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a financial services company that serves the Lutheran community.

Through his interactions at Thrivent with various churches and pastors, he felt a growing sense of calling to full-time ministry, according to e-mailed information. He entered Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 2006. In the third year of his academic program, he served as a pastoral intern at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Va.


Gretarsson graduated from Concordia Seminary with a master's degree in divinity in May 2010 and received a call to serve Concordia Lutheran Church.

He was ordained June 27 at his home congregation, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, in Garden City, N.Y.

He and his wife, Heather, have one son, Elijah Lloyd, who is 14 months old.
