Cause of Cargill fire officially listed as undetermined

July 13, 2010

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The cause of a Feb. 12 fire that destroyed a Cargill Animal Nutrition building will be listed as undetermined, Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Jeff Sarver said last week.

At the time of the fire, Sarver estimated the loss at $5 million to $8 million. The building was in an abandoned part of Letterkenny Army Depot.

Sarver said he and investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were focusing on a front-end loader that had an aftermarket catalytic converter. Dust can clog those devices and temperatures can reach 2,000 degrees, he said.

"They were running it all day, so that was something we were looking at," Sarver said.

However, the cause couldn't be pinpointed, he said.
