AAUW awards annual scholarships

19 county students selected

Thanks to the successful AAUW used book sale, the Hagerstown Branch of the American Association of University Women has been able to award scholarships to 19 Washington County students for the 2010-11 academic year.

According to scholarship chairwoman Diane Sanford, a record number of students applied.

For those students who met application requirements, including academic criteria, scholarships were awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

New AAUW scholarship recipients for 2010-11 included Tiffany Arnett (Hancock Middle-Senior High); Kaitlyn Bosco (South Hagerstown High); Jenna Burkett (Hancock Middle-Senior High); Paige DeVore (North Hagerstown High); Meghan Dudley (Hagerstown Community College); Jessica Elliott (Washington County Technical High); Ginger Fink (Hagerstown Community College); Anastasia Gaines (Williamsport High); Mary Kavanaugh (George Mason University); Jennifer McSparron (Hancock Middle-Senior High); Meredith Reynolds (North Hagerstown High); and Samantha Truax (Hood College).

Current holders of AAUW scholarships who reapplied, met academic and financial need requirements and were granted renewals are Hannah Crosby (University of Maryland, College Park); Camille Heim (West Virginia University); Sarah Johnston (Hood College); Amanda LaFollette (University of Maryland University College); Deanna Mackey (Virginia Commonwealth University); Rebecca Slate (Frostburg State University); and Stephanie Toone (Hood College).

The scholarship committee awarded the following named scholarships in honor of AAUW members, past and present:

Louise Beachley Scholarship to Truax; Dorothy Cochrane Scholarship to DeVore; and Joann Fillingham Scholarship to Kavanaugh.
