Mail Call (7/11)

July 10, 2010

"I'm a proud resident of Williamsport and it's a shame that a town that is this beautiful and historic and does as much as it does for its residents, more than any other town in this county, that you have a few very unhappy people who are jealous ... in this town trying to downgrade the people that have done a wonderful job in this town." - Williamsport

"I'd like to say kudos to the Smithsburg fireworks display last night. It was a great show." - Chewsville

"I think it's about time when the next election comes up that we seriously consider if any women are running for president that we give them a vote. We need somebody in there to run our country that has guts and not someone who bows down to all the little interest groups." - Sharpsburg

"This is regarding the folks who are calling in saying the Republicans can do something about it, about anything on the bill. The Democrats have 59 senators, the Republicans have 41. The problem is, for you Democrats is, the corrupt governments that you want to support. Even your own Democrats won't vote for it, and regarding the unemployment bill, even your own Democrats will not vote for it. Republicans can't stop it without Democratic help." - Maugansville

"I just wanted to say a quick word to the folks at Fairgrounds Park that got the fireworks display put together last night, that they did a great job on it and that it was a outstanding display. I think it was one of the best I've seen in a long time. So to all you responsible for doing that, I say 'Job well done.'" - Hagerstown

"I am calling in response to the caller that called in about David Limbaugh, talking about the president, and then the caller responded back by saying David Limbaugh is the dummy sitting on his brother's lap. Well, I've never laughed so hard in my life. I can't stop laughing. That was a good one." - Hagerstown

"I was just wondering what happened to the traffic being directed after the fireworks was let out at the fairgrounds. Why was Jefferson Boulevard sitting for a half-hour, and then the cops told us to turn around and go the other way, and then traffic from Cleveland (Avenue) is letting them go? I don't understand this. Maybe somebody can answer my question." - Hagerstown

"I just wanted to comment that the fireworks that were at Fairgrounds (Park) last night weren't even as loud as the music that is on the square on Thursday nights. Something odd around there? Sure seems like it to me. We have asked and asked for them to turn it down, but they just seem to fall on deaf ears. Hope somebody can help. Maybe City Council next." - Hagerstown

"Well, indeed, Spanish is the U.S.'s second language. Now, we have Spanish printing on our coupons." - Greencastle, Pa.

"In the 'What's wrong with this picture?' column recently, a reader called in a very sensible problem about the Dual Highway/Eastern Boulevard left turn signal problem. The reader called in a lot of comments that made absolute sense. There is a serious problem with that intersection. Unfortunately, the response by the Maryland State Highway Administration made no sense at all. They didn't do anything to come up with ideas to help the situation." - Hagerstown

"I can't understand why the new Arizona immigration law is controversial. It's very simple. You either belong here in the U.S. or you don't. If you're a U.S. citizen or here on a visa or whatever, why would you not want to show your ID? The only ones that wouldn't, that would have a problem with it, are the ones that's here illegally. So I think it's a great law, and I give the governor of Arizona all the credit in the world for having the guts." - Sharpsburg

"You're absolutely right. I am unable and unwilling to make any distinctions among illegal aliens - which brings to mind the concept of E.T. falling out of a spaceship - since I don't know any of them, I don't know what they've done and what they haven't done. I just know that they cannot, because there is no process there, make themselves legal or look forward to having a legal way of entering this country and becoming a citizen. And that's a great shame." - Hagerstown

"Here's a message for the other Falling Waters caller. The reason the Republicans voted against the unemployment bill was because of all the things that the Democrats had attached to the bill. Give us that unemployment bill by itself and they'll vote for it." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Please don't call my scooter a moped. There is a difference. I do have insurance. It's very cheap, and I have a driver's license and I obey all traffic laws. I sure don't need the government squeezing any more money from me, especially for about six months out of the year." - Hagerstown
