What Do You Think?

July 10, 2010

The question posted Tuesday on The Herald-Mail's website was: What do you do to stay cool in hot weather?

Poll results:

o Stay inside with air conditioning: 481 votes (42 percent)

o Stay in the shade when outside: 7 votes (1 percent)

o Go swimming: 65 votes (6 percent)

o Drink lots of liquids: 39 votes (3 percent)

o Gut it out: 51 votes (5 percent)

o All of the above: 164 votes (14 percent)

o Some of the above: 313 votes (27 percent)

o Something else: 21 votes (2 percent)

o "Nothing like a hot day using the pool with the family."

o "Getting ready to do some work on this old house. Heat or not, work has to get done."

o "I do the same thing when the temps are low - get up, go to work. Can you imagine calling in to work to tell the boss, 'It is too hot outside. I think I will stay home today to be more comfortable.'"

o "I got up and it was really hot. I thought it would be a great day to take a day off from work and go to the pool with the family, then I realized I already had the day off."

o "Fire up the grill and ice down the beverages. That is how to stay cool. It's summer, for goodness sakes. It won't be long before you will be complaining about how cold it is."

o "I soaked a pillow in water, then put it in the freezer. The kids think I'm crazy sitting on it out on the front porch."

o "The biggest issue with the heat is the overloading of the electrical system, which could cause a blackout. They are advising not to wash clothes during the heat of the day to conserve energy that is being drained by air conditioners. This would be an area that needs addressed since we all benefit and it could use an overhaul."
