MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A 47-year-old Berkeley County man who died Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a wooded area near Oasis Club in the 2400 block of Williamsport Pike (U.S. 11) has been identified as Donnie R. Ramsey, police said.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Lt. Gary Harmison said that Ramsey, of 41 Midnoon Drive, was found at about 2:40 p.m. in an area next to a field several yards behind the club's gravel parking lot.

Ramsey was charged last month with one count of second-degree sexual assault and one count of sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old girl, and was scheduled to appear Thursday afternoon in Berkeley County Magistrate Court for a preliminary hearing, according to court records.

Warrants charging Ramsey with five counts of sexual assault and five counts of sexual abuse involving another girl also had been issued, but he had not been arraigned on those charges, according to court records and Harmison.

As a result of his death, charges against Ramsey were dismissed, Harmison said. He said such dismissal is normal procedure when a defendant dies before a case is adjudicated.
