Mail Call

July 09, 2010

"I think the city of Hagerstown should rename Howard Street to Blink Way. Instead of removing the traffic lights at Howard and Summit, we now have four sets of blinking lights there, in addition to three more blinkers down the street. Can't we save money by removing all of them?"

- Hagerstown

"Is it really the role of schools to feed children during the summer? Is it too much to ask those entrusted with the care of these children to provide them with adequate meals?"

- Hagerstown

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, add vodka and crushed ice, and enjoy the rest of the day."

- Hagerstown

"Let me try to explain why your real estate tax bill is like it is. The state and county are jerking you around with the Homestead deduction. The county is much lower than at other times. The state dropped it out all together. The Homestead form you fill out when you made settlement on your property said you only had to do this one time and that has been the case for years. Now, they want you to fill out a new one every year. But they never told anyone. I was told, by the tax office, that there was a form in my last tax bill - not. Government sticking it to the citizen again. And you can do nothing, pay the bill."

"They are looking for volunteers in Hancock for the Sideling Hill exhibit now. Why couldn't we have done this before the abrupt decision to shut down the museum in the first place? I'd sooner volunteer up on top of the mountain where it all belongs than downtown, where I'd have trouble finding a parking spot for the day."

- Hancock

"It's July 6, OK in yesterday's paper and today's paper, but especially yesterday's, the comics capture my opinion of soccer just great, so get your paper and look at the comic strip Get Fuzzy and there you go. Soccer in a thumbnail sketch."

- Hagerstown

"This is to all the people that are complaining about all our politicians raising taxes, sticking money in their pockets. The bottom line is that it's up to us, the voters to chose intelligently who we want to run our counties, our states, our country. If you vote because your neighbor voted for them, that's wrong."

- Hagerstown

"I live in Hagerstown and I'm not trying to preach anything to anybody but it's incredible what greed does to people these days. I'm watching a movie on one of the cable stations and it's amazing what greed does to people today. Think about what it's like today if it was that bad back when this movie was made. People don't care, it's all me, me, me. Why should they worry about the next guy?

- Hagerstown

"Can anyone out there explain how your house assessment drops $8,000 but your tax bill goes up $173? How far did these people go through school? Isn't this something we fight against in the communist countries?"

- Butch

"Concerning the Arizona immigrant law that is taking place right now, who cares if it's racial profiling or not. If you don't belong in this country, then you don't belong here. I don't care if you're black, blue, yellow or green. If you're illegal, you're illegal. I don't see how our federal government can waste the money when we need money so bad. Obama is trying every way he can to spend this money. How can they waste the money on a lawsuit against Arizona?"

- Sharpsburg

"I think the tax assessment tax is a scam."

- Hagerstown

"Just saw Barack Obama on the TV again this morning and it made me get a sinking feeling in my stomach. I just can't stand this."

- Sharpsburg

"I agree with the Williamsport caller that the governor of Arizona should run for president. She has our vote plus a lot more. She wants change and the ones in there now don't care about change. They should be kicked out immediately. They are no good. And by the way, does anyone have the governor of Arizona's address? I want to send her a thank-you note."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I think the federal government's response of suing the state of Arizona for the immigrant law that they are trying to pass is ridiculous. If I was the governor of Arizona, as they caught the illegal immigrants coming across the border, they ought to put them on a bus and drive them up to the White House steps and let them out. Do that a few times and let that be the Obamas' problem."

- Williamsport

"I'd like to comment on the person who called into Mail Call today where they read the safety for the Fourth of July saying that they'd like to thank the fire department for sucking all the fun out of the holiday. I'd like to refer them to page A1 for the smoldering fireworks blamed for house fire. The fire department didn't suck any fun out of the holidays. They are there to serve and protect. Read page A1."

- The great city of Williamsport

"I just want to say a word of thanks to the fire department that we have here in town who responded to my building this morning. The fire alarm got flipped and I had to evacuate and get out quick. They got there fast. I don't think they get the credit that they deserve and I think it's a shame."
