Memorial service for Byrd planned in Martinsburg

July 08, 2010

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Martinsburg.

The one-hour program will be ecumenical, nonpartisan and nondenominational, and will include special remembrances, clergy from several local churches, plus passages and music associated closely with Sen. Byrd, according to organizers.

The service is being held to allow area residents who were unable to travel to Washington or Charleston, W.Va., to pay last respects to the late senator, who died last week. He was 92.

The church is at 700 New York Ave., at the intersection of Faulkner and New York avenues.

All are welcome to attend this regional celebration, including families and children, organizers said.

More information about the service is on the Internet at http://www.wvpan.com
