Mail Call

July 07, 2010

"If you read The Herald-Mail on Thursday, the 1st of July, 2010, you will see that all the Republicans has once again stuck it to the working man. Every one of them voted against extending unemployment benefits to the millions of the unemployed. They have done this for ... they would have all voted for it. I know that a great many of you are Republicans. If you continue to vote for these people, you are getting what you deserve."

- Halfway

"I think it's a pretty sad day for our country when the federal government of our country decides to, intends to sue Arizona over this immigration law and side with Mexico. That is a pretty low blow to our country that Obama and his bunch of cronies would do that, but apparently that's what they intend, and I think it's up to us Americans to do something about it in 2012."

"Wake-up call for all you people out there blaming Republicans for everything, with everything that's going on the government, blaming the Republicans: The Democrats are in control of Congress and Senate and everything. They can pass anything they want to, so just get your life together and understand what's going on."

- Hagerstown

"One of the best ways to gratify your self-worth is not by showing off, but by being helpful to those who need assistance. Remember, the reward is better than the applause."

- Smithsburg

"For the caller who asked about Allegiant Air and what's going on, about the planes being full at all time: The answer is simple. Allegiant really isn't an airline. It's a charter service. Their main purpose is to send you to Florida to rent a car and a motel. Unfortunately, most people flying from this area are met there at Sanford by relatives. Thus, the hotels and the cars aren't being rented. It's as simple as that."

- Smithsburg

"You know, I found out what the Republicans' slogan's gonna be for the 2010 elections. It's 'No, no, and no, and no'. They have been saying no all the last couple of years and they haven't changed their mind. So that's what it's gonna be: No, no, no, no."

- Hagerstown

"The city can't fix potholes with grant money awarded to plant trees. It's that simple. Increasing the tree canopy of a city has too many benefits to mention here. You sound like someone who cares. I suggest attending the Hagerstown college, which has a free 8- to 10-week course meeting one night a week, and covers every aspect of city government. Then locate your Neighborhood First group and get involved. Ask not what your city can do for you, but rather what can you do for your city."

- Hagerstown

"In reference to the picture on the front page of this morning's paper of employees of the National Park Service unfurling the American flag, of all people, they should be knowledgeable of the proper handling of the flag. Old Glory is to never touch the ground. Even every Boy and Girl Scout is aware of that protocol."

- Clear Spring

"Wake up, America. Our tax dollars are going to overseas to banks. Citibank and Bank America have offices in India, and our tax dollars should not go there. The federal government should not lend money out to banks or businesses that have, that does have offices overseas. Please, America, wake up."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Here it is, the Fourth of July in the land of the free, and time to give the government a couple thousand dollars for permission to live in your own home again for another year. What makes it worse, you know they will squander it away."

- Pondsville

"I'd like to see the governor of Arizona run for president. I agree with another caller that said we need somebody to vote for and not vote against. And I would vote for her in a heartbeat, because she's not afraid to say what she thinks and do what she thinks, and that's what we need. No pandering to who's gonna vote for you later."

- Williamsport

"Thank you to the good citizen in Smithsburg for sharing the Do Not Call number. It is the first thing I saw in Mail Call that was worthy of follow-up."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"In regards to the people who are using motorized wheelchairs through parking lots or on sidewalks and streets, if they would just put a small flag on a stick and put it higher than their vehicle, it would be a great help. I saw one man had one of those flags in a parking lot in the east end of town, and it was a big help to see where he was. It shouldn't be too difficult - just like a dowel rod (on the) vehicle would be very helpful to him and everybody else."

- Hagerstown

"I want to make a comment to all you Washington County Republicans who voted all these Republican commissioners into office. My tax bill came today. My taxes didn't go down. My assessment went down, taxes didn't. You Republicans can't blame Washington, you can't blame Obama, you can't blame Maryland. You gotta blame the Republican, Washington County Republicans."

- Hagerstown
